Reading it just doesn't show you WHERE exactly to put your hands, or HOW &lt;span id="SPELLING_ERROR_1" class="blsp-spelling-corrected"&gt;exactly&lt;/span&gt; to stand.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Pictures are good, but they only help so much. After all, it's too easy for the Yoga Guy to look at the picture and say 'OK, well how did you GET there?!'&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;That's why I'm pleased to share the &lt;a href="http://www.youtube.com/user/YogaKat"&gt;You Tube Yoga channel&lt;/a&gt; from Yoga Kat!&lt;br /&gt;Click on her various tutorials and learn the Basic Yoga Poses by WATCHING them.&lt;br /&gt;Pause when &lt;span id="SPELLING_ERROR_2" class="blsp-spelling-corrected"&gt;necessary&lt;/span&gt;. Yoga Positions&lt;/strong&gt;.&lt;br /&gt;Sure, there were all kinds of stories and rumours about what positive effects &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_1"&gt;Tantric&lt;/span&gt; Yoga had on &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_2"&gt;Sting's&lt;/span&gt; love making...&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;..rumours he ultimately dismissed as exaggerated.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But let's get to know &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_3"&gt;Tantric&lt;/span&gt; Yoga and the &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_4"&gt;Tantric&lt;/span&gt; Yoga positions, &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_5"&gt;because&lt;/span&gt; many of them can fall into the category of Basic Yoga Positions.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;According to &lt;a href="http://www.blogger.com/www.abc-of-yoga.com"&gt;ABC of Yoga&lt;/a&gt;, &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_6"&gt;Tantric&lt;/span&gt; Yoga "pertains to concentrating on expanding one’s energy in order to achieve the goals of tantra."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;OK, that may strike you as &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_7"&gt;vague&lt;/span&gt;...but you can read the entire &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_8"&gt;definition&lt;/span&gt; and article &lt;a href="http://www.abc-of-yoga.com/styles-of-yoga/tantric-yoga.asp"&gt;here&lt;/a&gt;.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In fact, the 'men' who read Yoga for Men may dismiss the entire idea of spiritualism an the &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_9"&gt;etherworld&lt;/span&gt; and just concentrate on what these poses will do for your Sex Life. In fact, an article written on the &lt;a href="http://www.practiciingyoga.info/"&gt;Practicing Yoga &lt;/a&gt;website kicks off with this: "&lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_10"&gt;Tantric&lt;/span&gt; yoga positions quite often conjure up thoughts of sex positions..." The whole article is &lt;a href="http://practicingyoga.info/tantric_yoga_positions.php"&gt;here&lt;/a&gt;. (But in fairness to both you and the website, it goes to explain that &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_11"&gt;Tantric&lt;/span&gt; Yoga Positions are NOT strictly about sex and erotica. Sorry!)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;(I have to give props to Practicing Yoga &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_12"&gt;because&lt;/span&gt; they, too, have an article called &lt;a href="http://practicingyoga.info/yoga_for_men.php"&gt;Yoga For Men&lt;/a&gt;!)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In all, &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_13"&gt;Tantric&lt;/span&gt; Yoga works on both your flexibility and your endurance. So while it's focus is NOT directly pertaining to sex, you can see where and how it will help!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_14"&gt;Because&lt;/span&gt; most teachers of &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_15"&gt;Tantric&lt;/span&gt; Yoga want to reiterate the history and &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_16"&gt;spirituality&lt;/span&gt; of the art, it was very difficult to find an easy-to-follow page of visual 'examples' of the poses. (At least, not as easy to follow as my previous Basic Yoga Poses post). However, &lt;a href="http://tantricyogatechniques.com/tantric-yoga-positions/"&gt;I found this article that explains some basic &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_17"&gt;Tantric&lt;/span&gt; Poses for you&lt;/a&gt;. It comes from the &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_18"&gt;TantricYogaTechniques&lt;/span&gt;.com website.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So, men, as you build your muscles and strengthen your backs and arms and abs...don't be &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_19"&gt;afraid&lt;/span&gt; to look around a little and get to know the &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_20"&gt;different&lt;/span&gt; TYPES of Yoga and how they can help you to grow, both physically and spiritually.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Who knows? You need to master the basics so that you can move forward and advance to the more advanced. Knowing the basics builds mental and physical strength, and as you add more poses/steps/actions you get more out of the &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_0"&gt;exercise&lt;/span&gt;.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But you always mind the basics.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;One of the basic yoga poses was the Sun Salutation.&lt;br /&gt;I found a GREAT example of the 'basic' Sun Salutation &lt;a href="http://www.squidoo.com/sun-salutation"&gt;here&lt;/a&gt;.&lt;br /&gt;It shows, in pictures, the core steps of the Sun &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_1"&gt;Salutation&lt;/span&gt;...and explains each one clearly.&lt;br /&gt;Once you get the hang of it you can extend the stretches, widen them, hold them longer, etc.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;That's the &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_2"&gt;nice&lt;/span&gt; thing about Yoga (&lt;a href="http://www.squidoo.com/YogaForMen"&gt;Yoga for Men &lt;/a&gt;and otherwise). If you do even the basic yoga poses correctly you gain tone, endurance and flexibility. As you increase the level of difficulty, you open your body to higher levels of both &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_3"&gt;physical&lt;/span&gt; attribute (&lt;span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_4"&gt;Strength&lt;/span&gt;, flexibility, etc) as well as higher &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_5"&gt;conscienceness&lt;/span&gt; and better health.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;(A note about better health - this isn't some &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_6"&gt;quacky&lt;/span&gt; &lt;a href="http://homeoinfo.com/01_philosophy/basics/introduction.php"&gt;holistic jargon &lt;/a&gt;I'm feeding you. Yoga opens up the body to better blood flow and deeper breathing. Your body &lt;em&gt;needs&lt;/em&gt; this, and the more of it you get, the healthier you become.)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So, don't look at the Sun Salutation as just another morning jog. It's an &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_7"&gt;exercises&lt;/span&gt; that does more than 'tones your legs' or 'tightens the abs'. Nobody wants to show up for their first Yoga class knowing nothing. You stand there looking around at everyone stretching and you think “Uh oh. What am I doing here?”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So here are some very Basic Yoga poses so that when you make your foray into Yoga for Men you aren’t completely in the dark.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Most workouts start with the &lt;a href="http://www.abc-of-yoga.com/yogapractice/sunsalutation.asp"&gt;Sun Salutation&lt;/a&gt;…but this is a collection of positions and since we are talking ‘pure beginner’ here we’ll address that in a future article.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;How about the &lt;a href="http://www.fotosearch.com/IMZ247/szo0684/"&gt;Tree Pose&lt;/a&gt;? While standing, place the bottom your right foot against the inner thigh of your left leg. See how long you can hold the position. It’s simply a matter of balance and concentration. Now switch legs and do it again.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Often, the act of standing straight is the &lt;a href="http://www.fotosearch.com/THK012/c0032751/"&gt;Mountain Pose&lt;/a&gt;. The most Basic Yoga Pose of them all!&lt;br /&gt;Stand straight with your feet together. Your arms may remain at your sides Press the feet flat against the floor and visualize yourself lifting upward. Gradually lift your arms over your head until your palms are touching. Equally distribute your body weight. Breathe deeply and impose your best posture. Open up your spine and allow blood, oxygen and positive energy to flow through.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Now, as long as you are in this position…s-l-o-w-l-y bend at your waist, keeping your legs planted and your arms out. Bend as far forward as you can…SLOWLY!...and bring your arms down so that you can touch your toes.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Often, those new to yoga cannot touch their toes, and that’s nothing to be ashamed of. Your body needs to be used to the flexibility you are going to teach it. How far CAN you reach? Can you touch your ankles? Your shins?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I’ve found that in short time (a week or so, depending on what other exercises you do) you’ll be able to touch your toes…just let your body get used to the gradual art of stretching.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;(Quick note – Mountain Pose into Toe Touching…these Basic Yoga Poses are the first 3 steps of the Sun Salutation. We’ll do more in a later post).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Do the Mountain Pose again.&lt;br /&gt;Now, we’ll try Padahastasana…the Basic Leg Clasp.&lt;br /&gt;Spread your feet about 18” apart.&lt;br /&gt;Put your arms out at your side.&lt;br /&gt;Now, slowly bend and twist at the torso. You want to touch your right calf with your left hand. Keep your Right arm extended…and pointing up at the sky. Your head is turned so that you are looking up at the sky as well.&lt;br /&gt;Hold the pose for a 5 count. Feel the energy moving through your legs.&lt;br /&gt;Slowly Rise back to the Mountain pose.&lt;br /&gt;Repeat on the other side, so that your Right Hand is clasping your Left calf, and your Left arm is pointed facing the sky.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you are looking at &lt;a href="http://www.squidoo.com/YogaForMen"&gt;Yoga for Men &lt;/a&gt;for the ‘meditation’ side of yoga as well as the strength building, learn the &lt;a href="http://www.fotosearch.com/photos-images/lotus-position.html"&gt;Lotus Position&lt;/a&gt;. This basic “sitting with legs crossed” position has the added effort of being the heels of your feet as close to your abdomen as possible. Remember to keep your back completely straight. Almost all yoga poses were designed to keep your posture perfect so that you can maximize the blood, oxygen and energy flowing through your spine.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Now, as long as you are sitting, relax your les and sit with them out straight.&lt;br /&gt;Reach both of your arms out…bend your head down like you are looking at your legs…and s-l-o-w-l-y reach forward in an effort to touch your toes. Lean forward, from the waist, as far as you can. Touch your toes or ankles and hold the position for a 5 count…letting your spine stretch.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Now, it’s time for &lt;a href="http://www.fotosearch.com/photos-images/Savasana.html"&gt;Savasana&lt;/a&gt;…the relaxation post.&lt;br /&gt;Lay back, completely level with the ground.&lt;br /&gt;Your palms upward to the sky and your legs about 12” apart from each other.&lt;br /&gt;Breathe deeply and slowly.&lt;br /&gt;Feel the energy around you. Feel it flow upward…from your feet to your thighs…to your stomach.&lt;br /&gt;Be aware of your breathing. Maybe those of us who only see Yoga as 'excercise' won't care about what their sweatpants are made of...but those who see Yoga as a 'practice' knw it's a 'lifestyle'. Are you more self aware? Are you more creative?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Yoga works on the 'inside' as well as the 'outside'.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;That's why I wanted to talk up Simple Origami.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;My friend Chris has written that "The art of origami helps you balance your physical and mental relationship."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;You might already know that your left side of your body is controlled by the right hand side of your brain and vice versa. Each side of your brain is responsible for different tasks that your body does.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This is relevant because when you apply yourself to following an origami design, using folds and creases to construct that pattern you use both sides of your brain! As you focus on solving the design by folding your square piece of paper. I get 4 or 5 entries down the page, and there it is: &lt;a href="http://www.blogger.com/www.dallasnakedyoga4men.net"&gt;Dallas Naked Yoga for Men&lt;/a&gt;. And I'm, like , NO WAY!!!! BLEAUGHGH!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It's hard enough, as a guy, to be taken seriously for doing yoga.&lt;br /&gt;All I need is the world to think I do NAKED Men's Yoga and I am finished.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;BUT WAIT...!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;4 searches down FURTHER: &lt;a href="http://www.blogger.com/www.austinnakedyoga.com"&gt;Austin Naked Yoga&lt;/a&gt;.&lt;br /&gt;Yeah, go on. Click the link. You are NOT going to see Pam Anderson and Claudia Schiffer in any sexy poses....&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Remember the movie "Officer and a Gentleman"? The Marine drill seargent tells a new recruit "Texas? Nuthin' but Queers and Steers in Texas!"&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I never, ever, ever, ever associated Texas with queers OR steers. In fact, I thought most cattle was raised in Oklahoma. Shows you what I know.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The bottom line is, that here I am pushing Yoga as a difficult and serious work out practice for men...and Google is listing Yoga for Men as a high ranking listing for alternative lifestyles.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I had no idea...&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Nevertheless, I am undeterred. Perhaps my friends wil not take me seriously, but I know what I know. And what I know is that yoga kicks butt. I want to see it...step by step...so I know if I am doing it right. (You ever assemble something using text-based directions, and you don't figure out that it's wrong until it's 95% put together? We have a lot in common. She's a feminine little princess that likes to watch Football with me.  She also likes to play princesses and dance to You Tube videos.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I love her so much taht it pains me when things are less than perfect for her.&lt;br /&gt;While she's involvved with Soccer and Dance, she still is having a hard time geting rid of the baby chub. She's not terribly 'limber', either. Couple this with the fact that despite (finally) having her toncills and adnoids removed, she still strugglges with coughing and throat clearing. I like it. Sounds manly.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Mark Blanchard's purist and progressive "Power Yoga" class is for the 'real man'. No props. Nothing trendy. Nothing glamorous. It's designed to be straightforward, healthy and well balanced.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I don't know Mark. I've never met him. But his website gives a history of what has evolved into Power Yoga, and you can read about it &lt;a href="http://www.progressivepoweryoga.com/about_yoga/about.html"&gt;here&lt;/a&gt;.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The website also gives you visibilty to his blog, access to his newsletter, and dates for his classes.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Go on. I needed to learn the Basic Yoga Poses, but I didn't want to learn it from a 'girly' source. I wanted something written for 'men'.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;There were plenty of 'yoga for everyone' titles and even a 'yoga for dummies' I believe...but I really wanted something that said 'here's a Yoga book for beginners that was written for the man. Yes, YOU, sir. Here I am . Read me and become healthy.'&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;That book specifically was not on the shelf, but I DID find 'Yoga for Men' by Bruce Eric Van Horn. (Copyright 2002). The book comes with a CD that directs you through your yoga work out.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt; &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;In true 'man' fashion, these basic Yoga Positions are named after something 'business' related, so the Sun Salutation is called the 'Opening Bell' and the BackBridge is called 'Beinding over Backwards for your Customers.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt; &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;In true Yoga fashion, Bruce speaks slowly and clearly, and there is acoustic guitar playing in the background...but you can only 'man up' Yoga so much. To do Yoga properly, you need to be relaxed and you need to stretch yourself and you need to be calm. You can't take a deep breath and "power lift" yor way into the positions.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt; &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;(What a lot of people don't realize is that the stretches and contortions attributed to Yoga are designed to let more oxygen into your body and to allow your back to 'open up' and allow blood to flow more freely. This gives you a much healthier body, but doesn't take away from your raw strength.)&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt; &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;You'll notice the image of the book cover has that Amazon.com "Search Inside!" logo. I mean fit, health conscience men who care about thier physical and mental health.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt; &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;I discovered yoga when I was in a place in my life where not only did I want more 'working out' time (I couldn't afford the gym) and I wanted a healthier lifestyle. I wanted to feel good about what I ate, how I breathed and how I 'thought'.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt; &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;There are many, many blogs and websites about Yoga. Of them, there is a subsection that deals with "Yoga for Men'.  (I say this because, as an example, there are yoga websites, principles and diets for pregnant women.)&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt; &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;My goal is to scan the universe of yoga blogs and websites, and then combine the information with my own experiences so that other men doing or considering yoga can be better informed, and hopefully a little entertained.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt; &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Yoga allows you to open your mind, your heart and your soul so that you are healthier and more able to appreciate your surroundings.
